Are you too comfortable?
Posted by: | CommentsI wouldn’t consider myself a star singer by any stretch of the imagination, but I can hold a note and I have great timing…. Most importantly though, I LOVE TO SING.
For the past three months I’ve been attending a local “Open Stage”. This is where you can bring your guitar and you have the stage for about 15 minutes to do whatever you want. I’ve got a ton of experience as a guitarist and a back up singer, but I’ve never pretended to be the center of attention. After three months of this, I’m still just as nervous as when I started.
Some people ask me why I do it.
It’s simple. Because if you are comfortable you are NOT growing. Every time I get up there on stage I become more comfortable in my own skin. I feel more outgoing. I feel more valued. I feel more liked. I guess you could say I’m gaining more confidence. They say that you gain confidence through surviving the attempt. At times, I certainly would describe my shenanigans as an “attempt”, but regardless of whether I think I did awesome, or whether I think I bombed. I still get encouragement and applause. Nothing feels better than being accepted.
When I first started playing on stage years ago, I remember being so worried about the mistakes that I make. I was told a simple thing. “The audience wants you to succeed!” They aren’t there to watch you fail. They want to be entertained and inspired. Your job is to use their positive energy and have fun!
Trust and Relationships: Do they go hand in hand?
Posted by: | CommentsI was speaking with an old friend of mine recently who is just getting started in building his business. He told me of an unfortunate encounter that he had with an acquaintance of his. He has an established relationship with this person and has helped him in the past, but when he asked for this “friend’s” support in his new venture, this person flat out told my friend that he doesn’t trust him.
I admit that I was a little shocked by this. Of course trust is very important in business, and we typically teach that your most reliable source of trustworthy relationships are your current (and past) friends. So then, why is this person unwilling to put his trust in someone who has helped him in the past?
To answer this question, I went searching for some information about what trust is. Here’s what I found.
There are three dimensions of trustworthy behavior: Ability, Integrity and Benevolence.
Ability is simple. It is an assessment of your skills or knowledge that would give a person the confidence in your competency.
Integrity is a more of a subjective thing. It is whether the trustee adheres to principles that are acceptable to the trustor.
Benevolence is whether the trustor believes that the trustee has his best interest in mind.
With these things in mind, we can easily see that relationships may not be beneficial to trust. It all depends on your reputation with the trustor. It is possible that either of these three dimensions can have an impact on whether you generate the sale or not.
So what can we do?
Of course, the past is the past. There is nothing we can do to change that. However, it is possible to rebuild trust. Keep these three principles in mind with every action you take. If you can have the other person’s interest in mind, perform each task with integrity and to the best of your ability, then you are well on your way to successful business (and personal) transactions.
Food for thought

Some people want security and some people want freedom…
You can’t have both because, interestingly, they are opposites. The more security you have, the less freedom you have. Just ask anyone in a Maximum Security Prison.
Ain’t that the truth!
Play to WIN

I had a conversation with an old friend from elementary school the other night, and we were chatting back and forth about what has happened in our lives since we last spoke. He was doing great… He has his own business, he’s got some real estate investments. I was pretty excited. It’s nice to reconnect with someone who’s got that entrepreneurial spirit.
Throughout the conversation we spoke about the mindset of the Maritime people (and the rest of Canada for that matter), and we agreed that so many people just have a sense of entitlement. As though the world (or government) owes them something. I’ve spoken with so many people who really do believe that they can just coast through life and by the time they retire, they will have a fat government pension to live on. We agreed that people are placing too much trust in our government, and personally, I just don’t think that our Healthcare and Canada Pension Plan program will be around by the time I retire. Definitely not the same as it is today.
I think that it has more to do with fear though. People rarely play to win, they are playing not to loose.
There’s a big difference between the two. I’m a big sports fan, and growing up I was heavily into competitive sports. I will tell you first hand that when you play not to loose…. YOU LOOSE. It’s simple. If you aren’t being aggresive and scoring goals… If you are spending your time in your own endzone… If you are tentative. You will loose the game. The game of life is no different.
Have you ever asked your grandparents (or even your parents) what they regret in their life? Isn’t it interesting that they don’t regret the mistakes they made, but rather the risks that they did NOT take.
I hereby declare that from this day forward, I choose to PLAY TO WIN!
Rich Dad Prophecy
Posted by: | CommentsI don’t know if you’ve ever heard of the “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” series of books but they are absolutely amazing. Especially The Rich Dad Prophecy. This book is absolutely unreal. My wife started reading it first and she was giving me some tidbits as she went along. You wouldn’t believe it.
Basically it’s all about the future of the economy and why mutual funds are in trouble. I don’t want to ruin it for you because there’s just too much useful information that you need to learn. I’ve included a link to Amazon.com. You can go there and buy it for yourself… it’s only a little over 10 bucks and it will save you far more than that in the long run.
Here’s the link: The Rich Dad Prophecy

I’m extremely excited about this. I wrote an article on procrastination… just based on some of my experiences.
Karaoke improves your public speaking
Posted by: | CommentsAlright… I know that sounds bizarre, but it’s absolutely true.
Think about it. The words are right in front of you. You already know the tune to the song. You are right up there on stage. Everyone is looking at you and it’s OK if they laugh!
I’ve read a few different public speaking books and I’ve seen this tip more than once. I know that I absolutely LOVE Karaoke! I think it’s so much fun! I also love “open mic night’s” as well. This is where you bring your instrument and you get the stage for 15 minutes or so and play whatever you want.
So if you are looking to get better at public speaking.. Grab a few friends, have a few drinks and head down to the nearest Karaoke club and have a great time!
Who is in control of YOUR life anyway?
Posted by: | CommentsSince I’ve been involved in personal coaching and training, I’ve felt at times that I’d heard every excuse in the book. I’m astounded though that even today I keep hearing new ones. The staples are still pouring in though… “I don’t have the time”, “I’m just not good at that” and of course… “I’m sorry, it’s just not for me”.Does that sound like you?
I’m ashamed to say that not long ago, I’ve uttered those very excuses to my coaches and mentors. The change for me came when one of those mentors pointed out a pattern that I’d gotten into. I always knew I’d be wealthy and I always said “someday it’ll happen for me”. I remember he said to me… “You are right… Someday it will, but why not today?”Interesting… Why not today? This got me thinking. The law of attraction says that like attracts like… that you attract to you whatever you focus your thoughts on. I was always pushing my destiny away from me. I was keeping it at arms reach. I was happy and comfortable to keep my impending success just out of reach…. “someday”. I was justifying my lack of action with the knowledge that someday I’ll be there and I’ll just wait for that someday to come.
Guess what? It wasn’t happening for me until I took the action to bring it to me.
So I ask again. What about you? Are you holding back? Why not do it today?
So many of us hide behind our excuses and justifications for why today is not the right day to go after what we want. We want to wait until we have more experience. We want to wait until we clear off our current debt. We want to wait until the kids are out of school, until we are more stable. Do you think it will ever end? Do you think there will ever be a time when you can’t think of one excuse for why you can’t do it today?Of course not! Life happens. It happens to us all. There are always going to be reasons NOT to go for it… but guess what? There are also going to be just as many reasons to the contrary.
So who’s in control of YOUR life?
If you really want to be wealth “someday”, why not start by taking the steps today to ensure that it happens. Start learning TODAY. Start building your strategic relationships TODAY. Find a coach/mentor TODAY. If you think you are going to be wealthy, then prove it. Take the steps! Get out of your comfort zone. As soon as you do, your life will begin to take you where you always thought you’d be.
Have you heard of the game CASHFLOW?
Posted by: | CommentsThere’s a game out there called CASHFLOW, it’s put together by the “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” folks. What a great game. I’ve played it a few times now with some friends and it REALLY gets you thinking about your financial situation.
I highly recommend it.

Are you ready for the Thirty Day Challenge?
Posted by: | CommentsI’ve been participating in a Thirty Day Challenge since the beginning of the month. It’s been quite a learning experience. Basically, it’s all about teaching us techniques to earn income through Internet Marketing. It’s great information for anyone who wants to promote a business or a product online. I’ve also learned how to do some market research to see what sells online too.
Very cool stuff… I highly suggest it.
